Kind of makes you want to become a vegetarian, doesn't it?

Craig from Vacaville, California, United States

A vegan better still! :0)

22 Jun 2009 7:42am

@Craig: Maybe so, but I could never give up my beloved eggs and cheese!

Lee from Fort Frances Ontario, Canada

A lot of rib eyes in this picture. Unbelieveable.

22 Jun 2009 12:06pm

@Lee: This is just one tiny portion of the feed lot. I was surprised, though, that it wasn't really very crowded.

Laurie from New Jersey, United States

I don't like to think about it...That is a great shot.

22 Jun 2009 12:47pm

@Laurie: Thanks, Laurie. I try not to dwell on it too much, but it was enlightening to actually see it in person.

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

Ooh, yes, kind of does! :)

22 Jun 2009 3:15pm

@Tracy: "kind of" is the key phrase for me. I don't think I could give up beef completely. Maybe just not so often?

jeff (aka dogilicious) from Millerstown, PA, United States

That is one huge herd of cattle. Great capture.

22 Jun 2009 6:21pm

@jeff (aka dogilicious): There were several others, but they were a bit camera shy. :)

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Rib eye on the hoof. No, I guess I'll still eat beef.

22 Jun 2009 6:50pm

@Steve Rice: Yeah. Me, too.

Denise from Duncannon, United States

If they only knew where they were going.... I am assuming this is a holding field for "bigger and better things"? I passed one similar years back in western PA and couldn't believe how many cattle they had crammed into a few pastures.

22 Jun 2009 7:00pm

@Denise: I'm pretty clueless about the process. I think they hang out in these feed lots until it's time to be slaughtered. I was a little comforted to see that these guys had a lot of room to wander around. They weren't crowded in the least bit. But they also weren't grazing in a grassy field, either.

PD from Overland Park, Kansas, United States

Seen similar feed lots in Western Kansas. Yes, I well still eat beef too!

22 Jun 2009 9:28pm

@PD: As do I, Paul. I love burgers and a good New York Strip.

vu@granby - Wolfgang from Granby, Québec, Canada

You are absolutely right, so I buy my meat only from trusted sources...

@vu@granby - Wolfgang: I've just finished reading Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. We're looking into eating more locally grown foods and are doing a bit more research on where our beef comes from.
