Danger!

Considering how dangerous everything is, nothing is really very frightening.
~ Gertrude Stein

A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time, and a courageous person afterwards.

This sign is posted on the walk near my parents' home in Little Whale Cove.

This is one of those signs that one feels means what it says . . and yet, the rocks still look tempting ! Love the nautical blue of the sign.

@Ronnie 2¢: And that's why the sign is there. I think too many people go out on the rocks to have their pictures taken and have been knocked down by the strong waves.

Alun Lambert from cheshire, United Kingdom

People should have the common sense to know that the sea is a dangerous place without sign's. It's like mountains with sign's saying danger, of course thay are :) nice shot

@Alun Lambert: I agree, Alun. Unfortunately, people do stupid things. But then again, they're probably not the ones reading the signs either. ;)

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

Yes a case of stating the bleedin' obvious. Nicely pointed out . Do you have a growing plague of signage out there too? Like the name of the cove, Is it the shape or does it get little whales?

11 Jan 2009 11:42am

@grouser: Yeah, I do have quite a few pictures of signs. Why do we do that?! ;) I like your phrase, "a growing plague."
As far as one of Little Whale Cove, though, I don't think I have one. I'll have to ask my folks what's on it.

Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand

Hehehe this is a great sign!! I think we should have lots of similar signs in NZ....there are not enough!! Don't take the sea for granted is the motto!!

@Linerberry: I'll have to check with my mom, Liners, but I think there have been a few drownings in this area due to people being stupid and going out on these rocks.

Jeff from Pembroke Dock, United Kingdom

I do envy your Mam and Dad living there..Ive been reading up on that area, and can understand the reason for the freak waves..Thank you for sharing this with us. :>)

@Jeff: Both sets of parents live in gorgeous places. My mom and stepdad are in Depoe Bay, Oregon and my dad and stepmom are just north of Seattle, Washington. How I wound up in Nebraska, I'll never know!! ;)

Graham Russon from Cape Town, South Africa

Nice informative shot.

Interesting. I wonder at what point people no longer became responsible for their actions? Sign, sign everywhere a sign!

12 Jan 2009 2:18am

@dogilicious: Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

:)

jamesy from christchurch, New Zealand

Well spotted and noted that you are on the correct side of the sign Les. A sad occurence just happened in NZ when 2 young tourists ignored signs and got too close to a glacier face which collapsed killing them both

@jamesy: What a sad shame, Debbie. I can't state specifics, but I'm fairly certain lives have been lost on these rocks along the ocean, as well.
